The People of the Book, the People of the Story

עם הספר עם הסיפור

Shavua tov from Atlanta, Georgia. Our host here, Norman Schloss, showed me a wonderful idea about the Portion, from a new book with commentaries that were written by Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik: During the the Exodus of Egypt it is written again and again that we must pass this story on: "... and that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son"; "And thou shalt tell thy son"; "Remember this day". That is, already back then, in real time, while the dramatic events were taking place, we received constant reminders that the most important thing is not what is happening now. The most important thing is to turn this reality into an eternal story. When they say that we are "The People of the Book", it does not mean that we are a People who reads books, says Rav Soloveitchik. It means that we are a nation that in itself IS a walking book; that the things are written on our heart. In our generation, he says, we parents are the authors. Our children are the books in which we write.
