So You Want to Start a Revolution?

Translation by Yehoshua Siskin

It would be worthwhile to read the following message before tonight arrives since tonight is our last opportunity to light the menorah this year. Rav Yisrael Danziger, in his book “Yismach Yisarel,” writes that lighting the menorah is not just a matter of a match and a candle, but that much more magnificent things are happening when we engage in this act:
“It is as if every person, even the simplest, when lighting the holy menorah, becomes a Cohen Gadol (high priest), and his home becomes a Holy Temple. He should not look upon the light he creates as though it had merely come from oil lamps or wax candles, but that he is creating the light that shone during the six days of creation. With such awareness, he will approach this holy task with fear and reverence, along with the joy that comes from mitzvah observance and from the understanding that a simple person like himself can make radical, revolutionary changes in the supernal worlds above.”
The above is dedicated to the full and speedy recovery of Yosef ben Pearl, Naftali Tzvi ben Gila and the others wounded in the stabbing attack that took place last night in Monsey, New York. It’s another hate crime that attempts to extinguish this Chanukah light.
