Prayers have power in war

Translated my Yehoshua Siskin

I just noticed that there have been more than half a million views of this short video that I posted of women praying at the Kotel. A multitude of Jews outside and inside Israel, as well as non-Jews who support us throughout the world, have shared it with their friends.

Anat Meir, who lost her husband David Meir in battle on Simchat Torah, inspired and helped to facilitate this prayer gathering.

As we learn in this week’s Torah portion, the words that come out of our mouths are fateful. Balak knew this and prevailed upon Bilam to curse the Jewish people. Instead of uttering curses, however, Bilam blessed us and we have benefited from these blessings until today. We learn from this how critical it is not only to speak kindly with one another but to bless each other as well.

This video has clearly been a source of strength for people everywhere who, upon witnessing the devotion of Jewish women praying at the Kotel, have been inspired, no doubt, to bless the nation of Israel too.

This parsha is a great reminder of the fact that there is a spiritual side, that it’s not just the physical war but there’s a war “behind the scenes” with prayers and blessings and positive words that we say.

May we say good words and may all the prayers (and views...) be answered.
